Berberis Hedging

If you’re looking for plants that serve as a practical boundary and are also beautiful to look at, our berberis hedges could be ideal. Berberis shrubs make a fantastic prickly hedge that can enhance the look of any garden and, as an added bonus, they provide winter fuel for wildlife.

Berberis hedging plants can be evergreen or deciduous and they’re characterised by their spiny foliage in greens or purples that changes colour from autumn through to winter. They typically bloom in spring with small, delicate yellow or orange flowers in clusters, and this is followed by small berries that serve as fruit for birds. The plants also make the perfect safe haven for birds, who will use them to nest in as the prickles offer protection from a host of different predators.

Hardy shrubs, they’re able to thrive in most well-drained soils and they’re easy to grow and care for. They also respond well to being trimmed, meaning it’s simple to keep them in shape.

On our website, you’ll find an impressive selection of great value berberis hedging plants for sale, each with their own unique characteristics. Like all of our hedging plants, they’re professionally grown and nurtured at our 30 acre site in Cheshire, so you can be sure they are of the highest quality.

Choosing the right berberis for your garden

There are many different varieties of berberis to choose from, ranging in size from dwarf species such as Admiration that only grow to around 50cm and are perfect for planting in rock gardens to larger plants like the Red Chief that can reach 150cm in height. These taller varieties are popular as barrier hedges because their thorns are great for keeping unwanted animals or visitors out. Bear in mind that whether you choose an evergreen or deciduous variety, it will keep its spikes year-round and therefore offer protection throughout the seasons.

You can choose from a range of attractive colours. For example, the Pink Queen variety has striking red leaves speckled with pink, while the Diabolicum has yellow to yellow-green leaves that are edged with red when young. The leaves then mature to orange-yellow in autumn. Another great choice, the Harlequin has deep purple leaves that are flecked with pink and cream. Given the variety of options available, you won’t struggle to find berberis shrubs that complement the look of your garden.

How to grow and care for your berberis

Berberis are hardy plants that can grow in exposed sites and tolerate moist soil types, with the exception of waterlogged ground. They can be planted in shade or sun, although they tend to do best in sunny locations as this encourages them to fruit.

It’s a good idea to prune the plants ‘little and often’ as this makes it easy to keep them under control and in good shape. As with most plants, they benefit from being fed, and we suggest using chicken pellets as this means you can’t overdo it.
