Fast Growing Hedges

Fast Growing Hedges

At Grasslands, we offer a wide array of fast-growing hedges. Fast-growing hedges can grow quickly to establish a dense, full border or property boundary. Popular for the speed with which they can transform your garden, fast-growing hedges can enable you to achieve your landscaping goals and help you maintain the privacy of your property.

Advantages of Fast-Growing Hedges

Fast-growing hedges offer numerous benefits for landscaping and property enhancement:

  • Privacy: Quickly create an effective barrier to block unwanted views and reduce noise.
  • Security: Dense hedging deters intruders and clearly marks property boundaries.
  • Attractiveness: Lush, versatile hedges can be shaped, and some varieties produce colourful foliage, flowers, and berries, enhancing your garden and attracting wildlife.
  • Windbreaks: Shield your garden from strong winds and prevent wind damage.
  • Noise Reduction: Dense foliage absorbs and deflects sounds, reducing noise from surrounding areas.
  • Increased Property Value: Well-maintained hedges can boost your property’s value and appeal.
  • Low Maintenance: Once established, these hedges require minimal upkeep due to their rapid growth, helping to hide weeds and stabilize soil.

Choose a fast-growing hedge based on your specific needs, considering the species, climate, and growing conditions. Some hedges may need regular trimming and watering to stay healthy.

Selecting the Correct Fast-Growing Hedges

When picking a fast-growing hedge, ensure that it can thrive in your chosen environment. Factors to consider include:

  • Climate: Choose a hedge that can thrive in the UK’s specific temperature ranges, as some plants are more tolerant of local weather conditions than others.
  • Sunlight: Determine the light conditions of your planting area. Some hedges need full sun, while others can tolerate partial or full shade.
  • Soil Type: Identify your soil type—whether sandy, clayey, loamy, or acidic—to ensure the hedge will grow well in your soil conditions.
  • Space: Consider the space available and the mature height of the hedge to ensure it fits well and enhances your garden’s appearance.
  • Purpose: Decide on the hedge’s role, such as providing privacy, acting as a windbreak, or adding aesthetic value, to choose the most suitable type.
  • Maintenance: Be aware that fast-growing hedges may require more frequent pruning and care. Select hardy species that can handle local pests and diseases and choose plants that match your water resources and maintenance preferences.

What are the different varieties of Fast-Growing Hedges?

With over 35 years in horticulture, Grasslands helps you choose the ideal fast-growing hedge for your space. Here are some popular options:

Privet Hedging

Our Green Privet, grown in a 10-litre pot at 160/170cm, is versatile and can be shaped as desired. It attracts bees and wildlife in summer and is resilient, with leaves returning in spring if missing. Plant 2 per meter for immediate coverage, or space them out and wait for the season for fuller growth.

Green Leylandii Hedging

Green Leylandii is a fast-growing evergreen conifer that provides dense, year-round coverage. Plant 2 per meter for a solid hedge.

Laurel

Our Laurel Hedging, available in various sizes, offers a robust and adaptable solution for your garden. It boasts dense, dark green foliage that thrives in both sun and shade, providing a lush, year-round screen. Ideal for creating privacy or defining boundaries, it can be easily shaped and maintained. For quick results, plant 2 per meter, or space them slightly further apart and allow a season for fuller, more established coverage.

Portuguese Laurel

Portuguese Laurel Myrtifolia resembles Bay Laurel but is more robust and suitable for exposed areas. It grows to 40/50cm with dark green, pointed leaves on red stems and has a slower growth rate of about ½ ft per year. Plant 2 to 3 per meter.

Planting and Establishment of a Fast-Growing Hedge:

When planting and establishing a fast-growing hedge, remember to consider the type of hedging plant chosen and the conditions in which it will be grown. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you plant fast-growing hedges successfully:

  • Choose the Right Plant: Pick a hedge suited for your soil and climate.
  • Check Light and Soil: Ensure the planting area gets adequate sunlight and has well-draining soil specific to the plant's needs.
  • Outline the Area: Mark where the hedge will go and space plants 2-3 feet apart.
  • Dig the Holes: Dig holes twice as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower, keeping the root ball level with the soil.
  • Prepare the Soil: Mix compost with the removed soil to improve fertility and drainage.
  • Remove the Plant: Gently take the plant out of its container, being careful with the roots.
  • Plant: Place the hedge in the hole, level with the soil, and firm it gently.
  • Water: Water well to ensure good root-to-soil contact.
  • Mulch: Apply a 2–3-inch layer of mulch around the base to keep moisture in.

Maintenance and Pruning for a Fast-Growing Hedge

Regular maintenance is required to manage the rapid growth of these fast-growing hedges. To ensure hedging maintains a neat and manageable form, follow the hints and tips below:

  • Monitor Growth and Health: Regularly check for pests such as aphids or mildew and treat them as needed. Ensure the plant is thriving and free from disease.
  • Watering: Provide consistent moisture to young hedges to support their root development. Make sure not to overwater as this can cause root rot. Also, make sure to keep an eye on natural rainfall as this will determine when you water your hedge.
  • Fertilising: In spring, apply fertiliser to supply essential nutrients, following the product's instructions.
  • Pruning: After planting, prune to encourage branching by removing about one-third of the height and lightly trimming the sides. For the best results, prune regularly every 4-6 weeks, ideally in late winter or early spring, to maintain shape and health.
