Euonymus or spindle shrubs are compact, evergreen shrubs. They are grown for their attractive colourful foliage and autumn colours. Leaves are simple and vary in both shape and colour between different species. They bear cymes of small flowers in late spring or summer, these can be green, white or sometimes even a purple-red colour. Euonymus are often grown for their spherical berries which split open to reveal seeds in autumn and winter. This shrub can be used as ground cover - minimising the need for weeding, as small hedges or as a specimen shrub. Spindle shrubs grow in any well-drained soil and prefer full or partial sunlight and shelter from cold winds. They can be lightly trimmed after flowering and any misplaced branches can be removed to maintain symmetry.
