Ceanothus or Californian Lilac
Are evergreen shrubs which can grow into small trees if left on their own. They have small, oval dark green leaves but are grown for their impressive display of blue, white or pink flowers that continue all through spring and summer.
Where to Site Your Ceanothus
Ceanothus are suitable for growing in a shrub border or against a sunny wall. Plants that are trained against a wall can grow to twice the height of those without support and only need trimming lightly after flowering. They can also be used as ground cover to minimise the need for weeding.
How to Grow and Look After you Ceanothus
Ceanothus should be grown in fertile, well-drained, the flower best if planted in full sun. A sheltered location ideally out of any strong winds. If you do wish to train the plants then you will need to put up some trellis and tie the branches in as the plant grows.
Feeding with a good granular feed can be applied in spring, such as GrowMore.
