-
Attracts Pollinators – The tall flower spikes are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
-
Low Maintenance – Once established, ‘My Castle’ is a relatively low-maintenance perennial that reliably returns year after year with minimal care.
Where to Site Your Lupinus ‘My Castle’
Lupinus ‘My Castle’ thrives in full sun, where it can soak up plenty of light to encourage robust flowering. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter. Plant it in sunny borders, cottage gardens, or mixed perennial beds, where its tall, striking flower spikes will create a focal point. It also works well in the back of flower beds, where it can tower over shorter plants and create a beautiful backdrop. ‘My Castle’ can also be grown in large containers, where it will add a regal touch to patios, decks, or balconies.
How to Grow and Care for Your Lupinus ‘My Castle’
-
Soil – Prefers well-drained, rich, slightly acidic soil with plenty of organic matter. Adding compost or well-rotted manure will improve soil texture and fertility.
-
Light – Grows best in full sun, sunlight each day. It can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates, but will bloom best in full sun.
-
Watering – Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. However, ensure the soil drains well, as Lupins do not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Maintenance:
-
Mulch & Feed – Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth and abundant blooms.
-
Deadheading & Cleanup – Remove spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of blooms and to maintain a tidy appearance. After blooming, cut back the plant to prevent it from becoming leggy and to promote healthy growth.
-
Support & Staking – Due to its tall stature, ‘My Castle’ may require staking or support to prevent the flower spikes from toppling over, especially in windy areas. Use soft ties to secure the stems without damaging the plant.
-
Division – Divide the plant every 3-4 years to avoid overcrowding and maintain vigor. The best time to divide is in early spring or fall, before the plant begins its blooming cycle.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Lupinus ‘My Castle’ pairs beautifully with a wide range of sun-loving perennials and annuals. For a bold and dramatic color scheme, combine it with other pastel or jewel-toned flowers like Echinacea, Salvia, or Penstemon to complement the soft purple and pink hues of the lupine. It also pairs well with other tall, architectural plants like Delphinium, Veronica, or Phlox, creating a stunning vertical display of color and texture. In a cottage garden, combine it with shorter perennials like Coreopsis, Achillea, or Geranium to balance its height and create a more natural, flowing look. For a contrasting effect, plant alongside plants with dark foliage, such as Heuchera or Black-eyed Susans, to make the lighter colors of the lupine pop. Its long-lasting blooms also make it a great addition to cutting gardens, where it can be used in floral arrangements.
