Heptacodium Miconioides

Son Flower Tree

Heptacodium are unusual shrubs that have an exoctic feel and will enrich any gaden.

Heptacodium Miconioides also known as  Seven Son Flowers are popular garden shrub with many winning features. Fragrant white flowers, which bloom in late summer to early autumn. This late-season flowering is especially valuable, as many other plants have finished blooming by this time. After the white flowers fade, bright red or purplish-pink sepals (bracts) remain, giving the tree a second wave of color. These sepals can last into early winter, providing additional ornamental interest. In winter, the peeling, tan-brown bark adds texture and visual appeal to the landscape. This feature is particularly striking against a backdrop of snow or bare branches. Height can reach 4m over 10years.

The fragrant, nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees and butterflies. By planting Heptacodium, you're supporting local pollinator populations, which are vital to ecosystems and gardens. The red sepals and small fruits that follow the flowering period attract birds to the garden, providing food for them in the fall and winter months. Its branches also provide shelter for small birds and wildlife.

Heptacodium Miconioides prefers well draind soil but can tolerate a range from loamy to acidic or alkaline. They thrive in full to partial shade. Once fully established they are fairly drought tolerant. They don't require pruning unless a gneral tidy of removing dead / damaged branches which can be done in winter whn dormant. They are also pest / disease resistant..

Due to its multi-season interest and striking form, Heptacodium works well as a specimen plant. It can be a focal point in a garden, standing out due to its late blooms, vibrant sepals, and beautiful bark. It also fits well in mixed shrub borders or alongside perennials, adding height and texture while extending the blooming season in the garden.
