Scabiosa - pin cushion flower - a very hardy clump forming perennials. They are a very rewarding plant that produce masses of flowers throughout the season. The common name pin cushion refers to the flower, as the centre is a little round cushion with tiny pin pricks. The flowers are borne on naked flower stems amongst masses of soft hairy foliage. Scabiosa do like good soil and sunshine. Dead head as it will encourage more and keep the plant looking tidy. The look nice in mixed borders and rockeries. The soft flowers do look very special, especially when blowing in a light breeze. They are known to bring more friendly insects into the garden such as bees and butterflies.
