Armeria or thrift are small tufted, cushion-forming, evergreen perennials. They have strap-shaped or linear leaves with dense clusters of ball-shaped, flowers in late spring or summer. They are very easy to grow as they thrive in most soil types except for waterlogged and can be placed in sheltered or exposed situations. They are suitable for rock gardens or borders and enjoy full sunlight. Sharp eyed and older people will recall the thrift on the reverse of the old three penny bit and can remember when it bought houses and horseless carriages whilst still leaving change.
