Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’ – A Golden Column of Year-Round Elegance
Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’, commonly known as the Golden Irish Yew, is a striking upright evergreen that brings both structure and subtle colour contrast to the garden. With its narrow, columnar growth habit and softly golden-tinged new foliage, this cultivar offers the same architectural form as its green counterpart — ‘Fastigiata Robusta’ — but with a refined splash of sunshine in the landscape.
This slow-growing evergreen is ideal for formal gardens, mixed borders, or container planting. Whether used singly as a vertical focal point or planted in repetition for a classical avenue effect, ‘Fastigiata Aurea’ offers enduring elegance with minimal maintenance.
Why Grow Taxus ‘Fastigiata Aurea’?
Golden-Tipped Foliage
New growth emerges with a fresh golden-yellow flush, contrasting beautifully against mature dark green needles — offering a soft, glowing effect without being overly bold.

Evergreen and All-Season Appeal
Retains its dense foliage year-round, providing colour and interest even in the depths of winter.
Ideal for Small or Formal Gardens
Compact and slow-growing, this yew is well-suited to tight spaces or highly controlled topiary forms. A wonderful choice for symmetry in pots flanking doorways or gates.
Robust and Hardy

How to Grow and Care for ‘Fastigiata Aurea’
Soil – Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Adapts well to chalky, loamy, or sandy conditions.
Light – Full sun to full shade. Best golden colour is achieved in brighter positions.
Watering – Water regularly during the first season. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant and undemanding.
Pruning – Minimal pruning needed. Light trimming in late summer or early autumn helps maintain shape.
Feeding – A slow-release general-purpose fertilizer in spring will support healthy growth and vibrant colour.
Planting Combinations
Pair ‘Fastigiata Aurea’ with dark foliage plants such as Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, or contrast it with soft planting like Stipa tenuissima, Lavender, or Salvia. It adds vertical interest beside low, mounded shrubs like Buxus or flowering groundcover perennials such as Geranium ‘Rozanne’.
Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Aurea’ is a timeless classic with a subtle twist — bringing golden highlights, stately form, and evergreen grace to gardens of all styles. Whether lining a path, framing an entrance, or standing tall in a mixed bed, it delivers quiet sophistication in every season.
