Rootball Hedging

Rootball Description

Root ball hedging involves planting shrubs with their roots encased in a ball of soil, often wrapped in burlap or mesh. This method is available from October to March and provides a cost-effective way to obtain large, well-established plants.

Root ball hedging is ideal for those looking to create substantial hedges at a lower cost. The plants are dug from the field, where they grow more robustly than container-grown plants, ensuring a more successful establishment when planted.

Availability and Ordering

Root ball hedging plants are available from October to March, with the best selections typically coming from the first diggings in October. For the freshest and most robust plants, it’s beneficial to place your order early. By ordering in advance, you can take advantage of special incentives for pre-orders. If you plan to collect your plants directly from our nursery, please order through our website and await confirmation regarding availability.

Collection and Storage

If immediate planting isn’t possible, we pot the root balls in compost to keep them moist. Ordering early allows you to receive the plants fresh from the field, giving them a head start in your garden. While transport shock can result in a few losses, the cost savings compared to pot-grown plants are significant. Consider ordering a few extra plants to account for potential losses. We do not offer guarantees, so review our advice and prepare to ensure the best results.

Planting Root Balls

Preparation: Ensure you are ready to plant as soon as your root balls arrive. If immediate planting isn’t possible, protect the roots by soaking them daily or covering them with soil to retain moisture.

Planting Process:

Dig a hole larger than the root ball, ensuring the soil is loose and well-drained. Place the root ball in the hole so it is level with the ground surface. Backfill with soil or compost, firming it gently to ensure good contact with the surrounding soil. Keep the sacking on the root ball as it is biodegradable and allows roots to grow through.

Special Considerations

Certain species, such as Yew, require extra care. Yew needs well-drained soil, which can be enhanced by adding grit or gravel and planting in a raised bed. For very wet sites, consider alternatives to Yew. Ensure the planting hole is well-prepared with fertile, broken-down soil, and avoid planting too deep—use the original soil level from when the plant was dug as your guide.

Post-Planting Care

  • Ensure the plants are stable and won’t be disturbed by wind. Firm the soil around the roots and secure taller plants with a stake and tie if necessary.

  •  Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue to keep the plants well-watered throughout their first growing season. During dry spells, water two to three times a week. After a month to six weeks, reduce watering as the plants establish. For late plantings in March, increase watering frequency if needed.

  • Clear the area around the new plants of competing grass and weeds, which can steal moisture and nutrients.
