Euonymus europaeus – Four Seasons of Colour
Euonymus europaeus, commonly known as the Spindle Tree, is a compact, ornamental tree valued for its seasonal interest and ecological benefits. In spring, small pink flowers appear, attracting pollinators and adding delicate charm to the branches.
Through summer, glossy green foliage provides structure and shelter for wildlife. By autumn, the tree is transformed: seed capsules split open to reveal bright red berries encased in orange-pink husks, a spectacle that also feeds birds. The leaves themselves often turn yellow or reddish, completing the seasonal display. In winter, the bare stems remain visually interesting, showing off their angular form and colourful fruit remnants.
