View full detailsPleached Trees are a sophisticated and striking addition to any garden or landscape, celebrated for their meticulously trained, formal shapes. These topiary specimens are crafted by training trees or shrubs into a structured, elevated canopy with a clear trunk. The result is a neat, architectural element that adds both elegance and privacy to your outdoor space. Pleached trees are typically created by carefully guiding branches to form a flat, horizontal canopy, providing a refined, vertical presence.
Pleached trees thrive in a variety of conditions but perform best in locations with partial shade to full sun. They should be planted in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil to prevent waterlogging, which can adversely affect the roots. Soil that retains moisture effectively is ideal, and using a soaker hose can help maintain consistent moisture levels, particularly during dry spells. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the root ball of the tree. Position the tree so that the root collar is level with the soil surface, avoiding planting it too deeply.
Consider your needs and relationship with neighbours before planting large plants like pleached trees. If your neighbours are supportive, you can use pleached trees up to the boundary, saving space while creating a garden underneath. However, if you'll be maintaining them yourself, leave room for trimming and accessing the back.
To hide unsightly fences or walls, wall frames are an option that won't consume as much border space as 6-foot fence panels.
Proper watering is crucial, especially while your pleached tree is establishing. Provide regular irrigation, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Watering is especially important for potted trees.
Regularly trim new growth to maintain the desired shape and density of the pleached tree. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper dosage.
Ensure the soil is well-drained and free from weeds before planting. Incorporate organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.
