Pyrus communis ‘Doyenné du Comice’ – The Finest Dessert Pear

Known as one of the world’s best-tasting pears, ‘Doyenné du Comice’ is a traditional fruiting pear tree (H 4–6 m) cherished for its large, rounded fruits with melting, buttery flesh and rich sweetness. Deciduous and hardy (H6), it not only delivers superb harvests but also brings ornamental beauty with spring blossom and attractive foliage. A perfect choice for orchards, cottage gardens, and home growers seeking gourmet-quality fruit.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • Covered in clusters of white blossom, which attract bees and pollinators.

  • Fresh green leaves emerge, giving a lush canopy.

Summer:

  • Glossy foliage provides structure while fruits begin to swell and ripen.

Autumn:

  • Heavy crops of large, rounded pears are ready to harvest in October.

  • Leaves turn soft yellow before falling.

Winter:

  • Bare branches provide structure and character in the orchard or garden.

Structure & Form

Height & Spread: Typically 4–6 m tall and wide, manageable with pruning.
Form: Upright, spreading, rounded crown.
Growth Habit: Moderate grower; suitable for training as espalier, cordon, or free-standing tree.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Orchards: A staple variety for traditional and modern orchards.

  • Cottage & Kitchen Gardens: Provides both beauty and fruit.

  • Training Forms: Excellent for espaliers, fans, and cordons against walls or fences.

Growing Conditions & Care

Position: Full sun for best fruiting.
Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil; prefers loam or clay.
Pollination: Partially self-fertile but heavier crops when grown with another pollinator (Group 4).
Maintenance: Prune in winter to shape and improve airflow. Thin fruit if necessary to ensure size and quality.
Harvesting: Fruits picked in October, best eaten after ripening indoors.
