Laurel Hedging, or Prunus laurocerasus, is an evergreen hedge known for its dense, glossy dark green foliage. With rapid growth, lush cover, and minimal maintenance needs, it is an excellent choice for a year-round hedge that enhances any garden.
Where Should I Site My Cherry Laurel Hedging?
Cherry Laurels are best planted in spring or autumn, though pot-grown laurels can be planted year-round. To ease the burden of watering during hot weather, consider investing in a leaky hose. When planting, dig a hole that is both deep and wide enough for the root ball, ensuring the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) remains above soil level. Fill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down to eliminate air pockets.
Cherry Laurels are adaptable to various conditions, including full sun or partial shade and different soil types, making them suitable for many garden settings.
Watering
Water the plant thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Applying a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base will help regulate soil temperature and support healthy growth.
While Cherry Laurels are hardy, regular watering is essential during their first few years, particularly during dry periods. Water once a week, avoiding the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
Growth & Pruning
Cherry Laurels can grow up to 60 cm per year, making them a fast-growing option for quickly creating a privacy hedge. Due to their rapid growth, they may require trimming several times a year. Trim back to maintain the desired shape and size, using sharp, clean shears. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's growth each year to ensure healthy development.
