Cherry Laurel, or Prunus laurocerasus, is an evergreen hedge celebrated for its dense, glossy dark green foliage. Its rapid growth, lush coverage, and low maintenance make it an excellent choice for a year-round hedge that enhances any garden.
Where Should I Site My Cherry Laurel Hedging?
The best times to plant are spring or autumn, but pot-grown laurels can be planted year-round. Consider investing in a leaky hose to ease watering during hot weather. When planting, dig a hole deep and wide enough for the root ball, making sure the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) remains above soil level. After positioning the plant, fill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down to remove air pockets.
Cherry Laurels are versatile, thriving in full sun or partial shade and various soil types, making them suitable for many garden settings.
Watering
Water thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Apply a 2–3-inch layer of mulch around the base to help regulate soil temperature and support healthy growth.
Although Cherry Laurels are hardy, they need regular watering during their first few years, especially during dry spells. Water once a week, avoiding wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
Growth & Pruning
While spring and autumn are ideal planting times, pot-grown laurels can be planted year-round. A leaky hose can help manage watering during hot weather. Trim to maintain the desired shape and size using sharp, clean shears, and avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's growth each year for healthy development.
Cherry Laurels grow up to 60 cm per year, making them a fast-growing option for quickly creating a privacy hedge. Due to their rapid growth, they may require trimming several times a year.
