Berberis thunbergii Golden Torch

Barberr

Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Torch', a cultivar of Japanese barberry, is prized for its compact, upright growth and bright yellow-green foliage, adding a burst of color to gardens. This deciduous shrub has a unique, columnar shape and foliage that shifts from golden hues in spring to rich green in summer, and finally, a soft orange-yellow in autumn. Its year-round appeal and versatility make it an excellent choice for garden borders, mixed beds, and smaller landscapes.

  • Foliage Color: Foliage emerges bright yellow-gold in spring, shifts to a fresh green in summer, and warms to yellow-orange shades in autumn.
  • Form: Naturally upright, compact, and columnar, ideal for small garden spaces, borders, or as an accent plant in larger plantings.
  • Size: Typically grows to a height of 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) and a spread of around 30-45 cm (1-1.5 feet), making it an excellent choice for tight spaces.
  • Flowers and Berries: Tiny, pale yellow flowers appear in spring, attracting pollinators, followed by small red berries in autumn, which add seasonal interest and are a food source for birds.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil and is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loam, or clay soils, with a preference for mildly acidic to neutral pH levels.
  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; full sun encourages the brightest golden-yellow foliage.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

Works well in low hedges or borders, adding structure and vibrant color to garden edges. Its golden color and columnar shape make it a great accent or focal point in mixed beds and gardens. Attracts pollinators with spring flowers and provides autumn berries for birds, contributing to biodiversity.
