Prunus serrula 'Amber Scots' – A Unique Cherry Tree with Striking Amber-Coloured Bark

Prunus serrula 'Amber Scots', also known as the Amber Scots Cherry, is a captivating ornamental tree that combines stunning bark with delicate blooms and elegant foliage. Known for its beautiful amber-toned bark that shimmers in the sunlight, this tree offers visual interest year-round. With its vibrant bark, delicate spring flowers, and lovely foliage, 'Amber Scots' is perfect for gardens, parklands, or urban spaces where it can be appreciated up close.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: In early spring, Prunus 'Amber Scots' produces small clusters of white or pale pink flowers that emerge before the leaves. These blooms are a wonderful early-season spectacle, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The blossoms provide a delicate contrast to the rich amber bark and bring a sense of freshness to the garden.
  • Summer: As the tree enters the summer months, its dark green leaves fill out, providing a lush canopy that contrasts beautifully with the tree’s glowing amber bark. While the foliage is typically unremarkable in colour, its glossy texture and soft movement in the breeze add charm to the landscape.
  • Autumn: In autumn, the leaves of Prunus 'Amber Scots' transition to yellow and gold, adding a warm pop of colour to the landscape. The vibrant bark remains a striking feature throughout the season, ensuring the tree remains visually appealing even after the leaves have fallen.
  • Winter: In winter, the tree’s smooth amber bark becomes even more pronounced against the backdrop of a grey sky or snow, making it a standout feature in the garden or landscape. Its unique bark continues to shine through, offering visual interest even when the tree is dormant.

Structure & Form

Prunus serrula 'Amber Scots' is a medium-sized deciduous tree, typically reaching a height of 6–8m (20–26ft) with a spread of 4–5m (13–16ft). It has a graceful, upright form with an open, rounded crown. The tree’s unique amber bark, which peels away in strips, adds texture and colour to the landscape, creating a striking visual contrast to the foliage. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens, urban spaces, or as a specimen tree in a mixed planting scheme.

Ideal for Various Landscapes

  • Specimen Tree & Focal Points: Due to its striking bark and elegant form, 'Amber Scots' makes an excellent specimen tree, perfect for standing alone as a focal point in gardens or parklands.
  • Urban & Street Planting: Its compact size and ability to thrive in urban conditions make it well-suited for streetscapes, avenues, and smaller urban gardens, where it adds interest and texture year-round.
  • Wildlife & Pollinator Gardens: The early spring blossoms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
  • Mixed Borders & Hedges: The tree’s unique bark and seasonal colour changes make it an attractive addition to mixed borders or informal hedgerows, where it can provide a focal point among other shrubs and trees.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. To get the most out of its amber bark and blooms, plant in a sunny spot where the tree can shine.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, moist, fertile soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy, sandy, or clay soils. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is ideal.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, Prunus 'Amber Scots' is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate cold temperatures, making it an excellent choice for a variety of regions.
  • Maintenance: This tree is relatively low-maintenance. Light pruning is recommended to remove dead or damaged wood and maintain its shape. Prunus 'Amber Scots' is generally pest-resistant, though occasional care may be required to prevent aphids or fungal diseases. Regular watering will help the tree establish itself and thrive.
