Where to Position Your Skimmia japonica 'Rubella'
This Skimmia thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for darker garden corners. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and should be planted in a sheltered position to protect it from harsh winds. 'Rubella' works beautifully in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or even in patio containers where it's rich red buds and glossy leaves provide winter interest.
Growth and Maintenance
Skimmia 'Rubella' is slow-growing, reaching around 0.75 to 1 meter in both height and spread. Its compact size makes it easy to manage, with minimal pruning required—simply remove any damaged or dead branches in spring. Regular watering, especially in dry periods, and an annual application of ericaceous feed will help maintain the plant's health and encourage vibrant flower buds. Unlike female Skimmia varieties, 'Rubella' does not produce berries but can be paired with female plants for cross-pollination.
