Why Grow Malus domestica ‘Elstar’?

1. Delicious Dessert Apples
Produces medium-sized, crisp, sweet-tart fruits with excellent flavour for eating fresh or cooking.

2. Reliable Crop
Consistent yields each year, making it a dependable choice for home gardeners or small orchards.

3. Ornamental Spring Blossom
Covered in pale pink to white flowers in spring, adding seasonal beauty before fruiting.

4. Space-Conscious Habit
Ideal for garden planting, espalier training, or standard tree form. Perfect for moderate spaces without overwhelming the garden.

5. Hardy & Easy to Grow
Tolerant of most UK soils, resilient to wind and frost, and requires minimal maintenance beyond basic pruning.

How to Grow Malus domestica ‘Elstar’

Position:
Thrives in full sun for optimal fruiting and blossom display.

Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil, but adapts to most garden soils. Avoid waterlogged areas.

Watering:
Regular watering during dry spells in the first years. Once established, moderately drought-tolerant.

Pruning:
Annual pruning in late winter helps maintain shape, promote airflow, and improve fruit quality.

Pollination:
Partially self-fertile; yields improve with a compatible pollinator nearby, such as ‘Discovery’ or ‘James Grieve’.

Growth Habit:
Deciduous, medium-growing fruit tree. Full standard at 10/12 cm girth. Mature height and spread depend on training, typically 4–6 m tall.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy across the UK (H5–H6). Tolerates frost, wind, and urban conditions.

Design Ideas

  • Plant as a standard or half-standard in orchards or gardens.

  • Use as a fruiting specimen tree in a lawn or courtyard.

  • Ideal for espalier against walls to save space and improve sun exposure.

  • Combine with pollinator-friendly plants to encourage bees and biodiversity.
