If your neighbours are supportive, you can use pleached trees up to the boundary, saving space while creating a garden underneath. However, if you'll be maintaining them yourself, leave room for trimming and accessing the back to tie it to a frame.

#### Soil type
Different pleached trees have varying soil preferences. Assess your soil's drainage and fertility before buying pleached trees if possible and determine which variety will thrive best in your garden.

#### 1. Soil preparation
Prior to planting, you should ensure that the soil is well-drained and free from weeds. You might want to consider incorporating organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.

#### 2. Planting depth

Prior to planting, dig a hole that is wide enough to accommodate the root ball of the tree. Position the tree so that the root collar is level with the soil surface, ensuring it is not planted too deeply.

#### 3. Support & Training

When planting pleached trees, stake them with two posts and a rail for stability. If you are in a very windy spot use a second cross rail midway between the top and the floor to give the plant more anchorage and reinforce the support posts. 

We also recommend using rubber tree pads and belts to protect the trunk from rubbing and to secure it to the rail. Position the plant upright and attach the pad and belt, leaving the shaping cane or post intact and tying it to support posts. Make sure to monitor the training ties/bands to prevent them from becoming too tight and potentially damaging the stems. For the first season or two, you will need to tie in the branches at regular intervals to get them used to the shape of the guide frame.

#### 4. Watering

Proper watering is crucial, especially while your pleached tree is establishing. Be sure to provide regular irrigation, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Watering is especially important for potted trees.

#### 5. Fertilizing

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper dosage.

#### 6. Pruning

Regularly trim new growth to maintain the desired shape and density of the pleached tree. You can keep the trunk or stem clear by pruning or rubbing off any new shoots as and when they appear. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in the summer. To preserve the desired height and formal look of the screen while promoting dense growth, use hedging shears to clip it once or twice annually.

Right Plant For The Right Place




Getting the Right plant for the right area in a garden is a tough decision many aspiring (and even veteran gardeners) struggle with, however we have a full guide on our site with lists of different plants for different areas, please read until the end and visit this guide on our Site to see the full list, however below are a few choices of plants from each section that I feel deserve special mention and perhaps a space in your garden!

Normally a lot of people discount shaded areas as being able to put plants into the ground, however that is not true, there are plenty of plants which thrive in heavy shade:

**Elaeagnus** - These plants are an extremely Robust and sturdy plant as they will thrive under almost any conditions and look fantastic as well! to give you an idea of just how tough they are, usually they are planted in coastal areas where they are exposed to cold and salty air that would stop most plants in their tracks.

**Rhododendron** - Again an extremely hardy and robust plant (It would need to be to grow in shade) but a great looking plant as well. Generally for the first couple of years of life the Rhododendron is a little different than other plants as it tends to grow more outward and then will grow in height. Obviously the Rhododendron is great looking plant with many different colour flowers, so many that I'm sure with enough searching you could get them in almost any Colour!

##### **Plants Suitable for North and East facing Walls - you always think of cold, shady borders when you see north and east facing but with our suggestions you will finally see some colour:**

**Choisya** - They come in a variety of colours and types, but most Choisya fit in well in any border, they are usually picked out for their attractive and aromatic leaves and bright five petalled flowers that emerge in late Spring/Summer. 

**Photinia** - An evergreen shrub with leathery, dark green leaves which are bronze to red when young with small white flowers that are produced in spring. Photinia's are Ideal as a screening plant as well as a stand alone specimen and grow well in most areas however just make sure to not have it sat wet as that is one thing they do not enjoy!

**Now those are some of the hardiest shrubs that grow in shade or sun, however if you live in a city and get a lot of smog/air pollution and still want some greenery for your garden, then a few of these suggestions may be just what you need.**

**Euonymus** - A great and hardy shrub that if you want an alternative to Buxus Hedging without worry of box caterpillar etc then this is for you. It will grow in nearly any position in the garden but prefers full sun and well draining soil. It comes in many Varieties however the most popular one we have is the "Green Spire" Variety as it is an upright variety that gets to be very dense and will produce beautiful fragrant flowers.

**Viburnum** - Such a versatile plant as not only can it be grown just as a shrub but also can the grown and shaped into may different looks and grafted onto stems to give you standard Viburnum trees (see photo below). However while they look fantastic, given a chance they will withstand even being close to cars or other industrial/smoggy areas. For example I have driven through plenty of villages where Viburnums have been incorporated into roundabouts or in car parks. 

As you can see the Standard Viburnum is a great tree that no matter the conditions is a beautiful plant and will fit in your garden.

**Camellia** - The Camellia is a vibrant plant you frequently see in lots of different gardens, they prefer a slightly more shaded spot and sheltered from the wind to really do well, however most varieties will tolerate sunnier areas. just make sure when planting to use an ericaceous compost as the Camellia prefers a slightly Acidic Soil (Planting in a pot would be a good idea in case the other items in your garden are not a fan of acidic soil) 

##### **Plants Suitable for Clay Soils (neutral to slight acidic) - these tend to be quite hard to dig and plant in, they can also hold water more than regular areas but in hot weather end up being quite dry areas.**

**Juniperus** - Used for everything from Specimen plants, screening and even making Gin! (In Case you were wondering then Juniperus communis is usually the plan most commonly used in making Gins and imparting that note of Pine into the drink) 
However they as you can see by being listed here they are fine to be used in Clay Soil as they are an extremely hardy plant and once planted will do well in most areas of the garden so really a very robust and hardy choice.

**Magnolia** - Again a very well known plant that is used all over the world in many different gardens with all its different varieties, but the reason why they are so popular is probably because of how good they look, but also the fact they are such a hardy plant. They can either be deciduous or Evergreen so make sure to double check on yours before you buy them!

#####  Plants Suitable for Shallow Soil Over Chalk - not much room for plants with roots that go quite deep

**Yucca** - This plant is a very unusual tough plant originating from Texas. The thin needle like foliage forms a blue crown over a cream trunk. Ideal for the hot border or jungle planting. 

But also because its roots tend to not go too deep they are the perfect plant if your border does not have too much depth. they also have the added benefit on not needing to be watered too often as they are used to having more hot weather and droughts.

**Aucuba** - Or Spotted Laurel are evergreen shrubs cultivated for their bold alternate leaves. Females bear large red fruits and are extremely hardy.

Aucubas can tolerate full shade so they are ideal for planting underneath a tree. They will also tolerate dry soils and salty winds.

They are best used as a hedging plant or as a specimen shrub. With the exception of a water logged soil, Aucubas can be grown in just about any conditions. They should be watered freely and fed a monthly fertiliser.

**Vinca** - or Periwinkle are slender stemmed evergreen shrubs or perennials which have simple paired leaves and colourful five pettaled flowers. 

They are very easy to grow and enjoy dry soil and full sunlight; this will increase flowering. Vinca do not need pruning but they can be cut back occasionally. They can be trimmed in early Spring and should flower again in the same year.

 

##### **Plants Tolerant of Both Extreme Acidity and Alkalinity - a good all rounder that can take both types of soil in case you are not sure on the PH of your soil:**

**Ligustrum** - Ligustrum Delavayanum or Ionandrum is a great plant for topiary. It can be quickly grown and shaped into all manner of shapes and sizes. They have tightly packed evergreen leaves and black berries in winter. In very cold times they may lose some leaves but will re-break in the spring.

They require clipping regularly to keep the shape and feeding with plenty of general purpose fertiliser. As with all shaped plants, when they are grown in pots they need special care in winter to protect the roots from freezing hard.

You can wrap the pot with sacking and if possible bring them up to a more sheltered spot out of driving winds

**Taxus** - Or Yew, there is nothing more stately and quintessentially British than a yew hedge. There are several forms of Yew but only really Baccata are mass grown for evergreen hedging. They are a little slow growing, so buy as big as you can afford, but once established they make a perfect formal hedge. 

##### **Plants Suitable for Damp Sites - this is where the soil really holds the water and can sometimes sit slightly wet**

**Cornus** - Otherwise known as Dogwood they are a very colourful deciduous plants that despite losing leaves in winter will still provide great colour through your border as the stems of many of these plants are bright red or yellow colour and are a really stunning change of pace in a winter garden.

Foliage turns rich Red and Purple in Autumn depending on the specific variety. Cornus are best planted in a woodland garden or as a specimen tree. Dogwood are fine in Damp Sites, ideally they grow best in well draining areas so if you can improve the soil you will be rewarded for your effort by this plant!

**Salix** - The classic, you knew it would be on this list somewhere, but the Willow tree is an iconic tree -originating from China - you always find near rivers or ponds for good reason because they thrive in wetter soils!

Renowned for their attractive fluffy catkins in spring time and colourful bark. They were introduced to Europe and the Americas as ornamental trees and are now well recognised due to their large characteristic canopy, short trunk and lance-shaped bright green leaves.

**Weeping Willows** form dense root-mats on the soil's surface or in shallow nearby water. They reproduce by dropping seeds which have long silk like hairs forming a small parachute. These seeds can then be carried for many miles by water or wind.

**Phyllostachys/Pseudosasa** - Despite being different varieties of plants they are both Bamboos and will work well in slightly wetter areas as Bamboo tend to want to be well watered to the point where they like their soil to ideally always be fairly moist.

Japanese Maple Help & Information

Acer or Japanese Maple

There are increasing numbers of new and interesting forms almost by the month. They range from dwarf shrubs up to small trees.

No garden is complete without the beauty of a Japanese maple. The colour in the Autumn alone is enough to warrant their use, add that to the pleasure the delicate foliage moving gently in a summer breeze, and you have perfection for 9 months of the year.

The dissectum varieties are better for smaller shrubs forming domes of arching deeply cut leaves. Once you have one you will want more and more.

Acers that can tolerate more sun - although the odd leaf still may scorch in the hot sun. The red varieties prefer more sun as the red is stronger:

- beni hime - red 

- kamagata - green

- red pygmy - red

- seiryu - green

Acers that prefer the shade, they can go a little in the sun but can get scorched:

- asahi zuru

- orange dream

- tsuma beni

- ukigumo

**Growing and Planting**

They are easy to grow and prefer a little dapple shade and a site out of strong winds. Best planted in slightly acidic soil and not too wet. 

If your soil is not acidic, including some peat in the backfill is enough. 

They are also the perfect plant for a pot. If they are in a pot remember to wrap the pot well in Winter or take inside to stop the frost killing the roots.

When watering acers they need it consistent, you can't afford to let the dry out and then increase the water to compensate for the lack of water. Ideally, they would be best having a bit daily or get them in the soil rather than a pot.

**Pruning Japanese Maples**

You should consider pruning it in Autumn/Winter when the sap is falling as doing it in spring can make them bleed too much and it is possible to lose entire limbs.

If it is essential, do it, use the wound seal treatment on the cut. It's not a bad idea to get into the habit of using wound seal every time you cut into an acer.

**Feeding Acers**

Use the organic chicken pellets or the ericaceous food in little amounts and do it often as using too much in one go could scorch leaves.

Thuja Hedging Information

###### Thuja or Western Red / White Cedar

I get asked this quite often what the differences are between the different types of Thujas as they are all fairly similar to the untrained eye however hopefully this guide below will help you identify which variety of Thuja you think would work best for your garden. This guide is not for all of the Thuja Varieties however it covers the main ones that we have in stock.

For an evergreen conifer hedge or large screen there is nothing better than a Thuja as they stand clipping very well and un-like leylandii can recover if you get a little ambitious with the cutter. When you brush the bright green foliage the scales release an enjoyable scent of spice. The bright green new growth turns darker with age and bronzes in winter. They thrive well in shade as well as sun. Thuja will grow about 45-60cm each year.

There are a few different Thuja options depending on the look you are after, however these are some of our most sold varieties:
Thuja Emerald - this is an elegant form with tightly knit bright green foliage. Has a more defined shape

Thuja Brabant - light yellowish green foliage that takes a bronze tinge during the winter months.

Thuja Excelsior - has dark green shiny foliage, sometimes a bronze tinge again in winter.

Thuja Atrovirens - rich green foliage

All varieties grow at a similar speed and respond well to same aftercare

###### Clipping Thuja

Prune them once a year and then do a tidy up again later in the season to keep them looking smart. As they are easy to maintain it can be done with hedge cutters or shears. Generally trimming at the end of summer or at the beginning of spring.

###### Feeding Thuja's


Give them plenty of organic fertiliser in early spring to keep them looking lush. We usually recommend using something natural like a Chicken pellet manure or something similar as it works well on a variety of different plants.

###### Dislikes

They don't want to stand in water other than that they will grow anywhere and all soils. Virtually trouble free.

Thuja do not like the extremes, either too much water or too little is not good for the plants, so if your Thujas are starting to turn brown then the main problems generally are caused by lack of or too much water. The good news is that even if Thuja start to go brown then if you give them a trim then the dead foliage will regrow if cut back.

Seasonal To-Do List - Winter

It is a busy time of the year at the moment, with Christmas looming ahead, presents need buying and arrangements to see distant family need organising, even rushing to complete those last few jobs that need doing before you go on Christmas break.

 

However, do not neglect getting your garden ready as a little bit of preparation now can make sure that come spring your garden will be ready to go!

###### 1. Prune/Trim
The First thing we suggest is to look at the Plants in your garden, more specifically the shrubs in your borders, they will be the first to suffer in the cold winter weather. Trim the plants in your border and make sure to remove any dead or dying branches as if not removed they could be a great place for problems to arise with diseases.

###### 2. Protect
Trimming is just one thing to do, but any plants that are not winter hardy or potted plants in your garden, it might be best to wrap them up with an old towel to try to trap as much heat in the soil as you do not want the roots to freeze and damage the roots.

###### 3.Planting
There are many things you can look at planting as you now probably have very bare spots in your garden after your trimming, you might want to fill it in with a few winter flowering plants or even just some plants that look great over winter despite being deciduous.

Be warned, you might be tempted to feed these new plants once they go in, however that may cause more damage at this time of the year as the plants will try to use the new food to grow soft new shoots which can be damaged by frost, so just make sure to give a good feed in spring and trim the frostburnt areas in spring.

I would suggest looking at Winter flowering plants like Hellebores, Heathers or Skimmias as they will bloom and look great over Winter, also the simple Dogwood (Cornus) or Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) will provide year round interest as the Dogwood will have bright colourful stems on them through winter and the Witch Hazel will have yellow/orange "spider-like" flowers through Winter as you can see below.

###### 4. Bulbs
Now is the time to be getting those Winter bulbs in the ground such as Tulips, most other bulbs will have already been planted by now, generally in September. To plant tulips you would want to select a warm and sunny site with plenty of drainage as the plants themselves are used to a dryer summer climate.


Tulips can also be planted in containers, just make sure to plant as about three times the depth of the bulb and about one bulb width apart from each other and make sure to check the bulbs regularly over winter to make sure the soil is not drying out.

###### 5.Lawn
The Lawn is often overlooked once you have trimmed it for the last time of the year as it will not grow so a lot of people just leave the lawn until next Spring however there is a little more that should be done to get it winter-ready. 


Firstly you will want to Trim the edges of the lawn, if it has grown a bit too much and going maybe in your flower beds or you have felt the path is getting thinner and thinner as the year went by, it might be time to trim back to where you want the edge to be to tidy the area and make a huge visual improvement.

You will also need to rake out any dead moss in the area, if your lawn is full of moss then you may need to be looking more at moss control like using weed killers or specialist moss killers.


Moss can be caused by a number of different factors such as the garden being shaded, or maybe being a bit too compacted in certain areas meaning the ground is not letting air into the soil or getting too waterlogged.


I would suggest trying to identify where it is compacted, usually this would be in areas where you regularly walk on the grass, and you can put a fork into the ground and move it about a little to aerate the area.

Make sure to leave the lawn over winter so that when it can, it can put on as much length as possible to stop moss from taking hold in the area again.

###### 6.Pond

If you are lucky enough to have a pond in your garden, then you will want to make sure it is tended to (Especially if you have fish in the pond) make sure to clean up the water to try to remove any dead or dying plants from in the water. The reason why this needs to happen is that dying and decomposing plant life in the water can produce gasses which are harmful to fish as if the area freezes over then the gas will have nowhere to escape to and can cause damage to your fish.

Also make sure to float something in the water like a ball to stop the water from completely freezing over, you can also use boiling water to unfreeze the ice, do not pour the water onto the ice, but you can put the water in a container and let that defrost the ice then remove the hot water once thawed.

 

There are also heating solutions for the pond, however that is quite an expensive solution and not available for everyone.

How to care for perennials in winter

Year after year, perennial plants provide UK gardeners with the colour and vibrance they need to brighten up any landscape. Their ability to weather harsh British winters, while at the same time maintaining their attractive foliage, ensure they remain a firm favourite in gardens across the country. 


From radiant hibiscus to lush green heucheras, a well planned perennial garden can provide an ever-evolving variety of flowers for years to come. However, in order for your perennials to prosper, they need to be correctly prepared for winter. Here are the key tips you need to help plant, prune and care for perennials during the winter months.

###### Can you plant perennials in winter?

While it is certainly true that perennials will only become the star performers of your flower beds during the summer months, this is not to say planting them in winter is a bad idea. On the contrary, there is absolutely no reason why you should avoid planting your perennials in winter and, in fact, there are actually advantages in doing so.

Unlike annuals - plants that complete their entire life cycle within one growing season - perennials will continue to flourish for at least two years. Subsequently, the winter months become a crucial period in their life cycle as this is the time perennials will typically bed down below rotting leaves and get used to their new surroundings. Indeed, unlike those planted during their summer prime, perennials planted in wintertime won’t need to be watered until the drier conditions are welcomed in with the start of spring. Given the necessary time and attention, as well as the correct methods and approach, perennials planted during the winter months will actually thrive in this cooler climate, perfectly preparing themselves for their summer splendour.

###### How to prune perennials for winter

In order to ensure your perennials continue to prosper and return to their prime during the spring and summer months, winter pruning is essential. Whether you are planting your cirsium or lupin in the dead of winter, or maintaining your prize perennials through their first winter period, there are three key pruning techniques you need to take advantage of:

###### Cut back stems, reduce watering and dig up bulbs

As summer turns to autumn, and your perennials have finished for the season, stems should be cut back to between 6 and 8 inches from the ground and watering should be drastically reduced. This will help harden off the plant in preparation for cooler and damp conditions. Sensitive perennial bulbs, such as dahlias, canna and gladiolus, should also be dug up or ‘lifted’ before the first ground frost of the year. These bulbs should be stored indoors and can be replanted in spring.

###### Feed plants

Winter is also the perfect time to feed your perennials. Applying a 4 to 6 inch layer of compost is a highly effective method. The compost will release nutrients to the plants, improve the soil structure of your beds, and help replenish your perennials over the winter period.

 

###### Mulch

Finally, when cold weather begins to strike regularly, mulching is essential. Old mulch around the beds of your perennials should be removed and replaced with leaves, straw, grass clippings, bark, sawdust or pine needles. This additional layer provides protection for the more sensitive plants and will insulate your bed.

These simple techniques will not only help to ensure your perennials survive winter, but they will encourage your plants to actively thrive during this period.

Pleached Trees - What are they and why they are so popular?

I'm sure you have seen these trees in all sorts of places but they are very commonly used in Gardens up and down the country, as you can see they are great in most gardens, however before you go ahead with getting these plants there are a few things you should consider before taking the plunge.

###### First off, what is a pleached tree?

A pleached tree in as simple terms as possible is a plant that has been grown onto a frame, another name for pleaching a tree is "Espalier" this is an ancient practice that used to be used mainly with Fruiting trees, this helped to control the production of fruiting.

This was all done by tying these branches to a frame and combined with pruning to keep the tree growing where it was wanted.

Nowadays obviously this is still a practice used for fruiting trees but not just exclusively used on them now, as you can see it has been used on many varieties of tree that either do not fruit/flower as it has other benefits.

Why do you want a pleached tree?

While you may not be looking to set up an orchard in your back garden you might just be wanting these for a more aesthetic purpose. These trees have many advantages to them rather than their non-pleached counterparts.

Their main use is in blocking out unsightly views that you do not want to be looking at every time you go into your garden or to block out those nosey neighbours!

Pleached trees a lot of the time come with a clear stem of up to around 2 metres in height and then it has the head on top of this meaning that is ideal if you have a fence that you don't want to obscure with a thick hedge but just need a bit of extra height over the top of this fence.

These plants are quite excellent for doing this as they can easily reach above the fence, the head will then act like a large sign that will block out the area above the tree especially as it continues to grow around that head and will fill out into a thick and dense block.

Not all pleached trees will come in the same shape and size as some will have stems on them, while others will not and will be considered a "Wall Frame" meanwhile others will come in all different size stems and with different head sizes.

Another thing to mention is that a lot of Ornamental pleached trees like our Photinia Red Robins or Elaeagnus trees will be 'grafted' onto their stems, what this means is that in simple terms the stems of these trees will not grow taller but will get thicker as they grow older.

The obvious benefit of this is that if you are buying these for your 2 metre tall fence to block views, you do not want these plants to start outgrowing your fence to create more of a gap between the fence and the bottom of the Frame. However the less obvious benefit of this is that you still have the area at the bottom of the plant available for planting up so you can use the area near the base of the tree.

While these plants are amazing and can be just what you need there are some things to consider before putting one of these in your garden. These are big plants, so if you are wanting to place one down it might be best to speak with your neighbour first as if you were to plant this right up against your fence it would make it difficult to trim if it was hanging over your neighbours garden.

Planting

Now for planting pleached trees, they can take a little more planning than a normal tree as the heads of these trees while great for blocking views, they can catch a lot more wind as well. We recommend that if you purchase one of these trees then you should also look at getting this kit to go along with it as it has everything you need to properly stake a tree in it [here](heavy-duty-tree-staking-kit).

 We always recommend that you erect a rail to sit about 2/3rds the way up the clear stem. eg; 2 metre stem rail at 150/60cm off the floor.

If you are in a very windy spot use a second rail midway between the top and the floor to give the plant more anchorage and reinforce the support posts. To the face of the rail you need to fix rubber tree pads and belts to stop the rail rubbing the trunk and to strap the trunk to. (make sure the nails heads are sunk into the pad so they don't scratch at the bark)

Best to do this once you have positioned the plants and it's a good idea to know where you are going to be digging the hole for the plant as you don't want to be digging where you have just banged in the posts.

Some people like to leave the plants in big planters or pots, the same method of support is best used for them as well. Posts are more important to get in the right spot than the rail, as you can simply over or under lap the rail when starting the next rail.

Position the plant upright and fix the pad and belt and you're all but there.

Sometimes the frame incorporates the cane or post that is already in with the plant. If it's part of the structure, leave it and tie it in with the trunk to your support frame, if not choose yourself if it is needed or not.

 

And that's all there is to it, planting these trees is simple so long as you have the know-how. These trees are amazing and will certainly suit your garden very well no matter the size or shape. Seasonal To-Do List - Autumn/Winter

As we rapidly approach the end of the year there will be a few things you need to do to get your garden in tip top shape, whether it be getting those last few plants in ready for spring or giving the garden a tidy up we have looked through what needs doing and put together a little checklist so you all can make sure your garden is sorted and ready to tackle winter!

First and foremost as you are probably reading this now, Autumn is just around the corner and while a lot of plants will be showing signs of leaves getting ready to drop. You will need to get the Rake out and begin to get rid of these leaves whether they go for garden waste or to the compost pile is up to you.
Now the second job (and possibly most boring) is making sure to remove all those little weeds from your borders and planting beds as over winter when it gets too cold to go out it will really spoil your view if your garden still has the odd weed poking through!

This is the final chance you will get in the year to give your hedges and lawns a final trim before they go dormant over winter. Make sure to remove all dead leaves from the hedge as over winter there won't be new growth to replace this and dead leaves in a hedge can cause rot and damage as can restrict air flow.

You might be tempted to feed these new plants however that may cause more damage as the plants will try to use the new food to grow  soft new shoots which can be damaged by frost, so just make sure to give a good feed in spring and trim the frostburnt areas in spring.


If you are a vegetable grower, while we do not stock these items now is a perfect time to start growing those winter hardy veggies!


Trim your perennials! During Autumn you will see all your perennial plants start to wilt and wane, when they start to go yellow and the stems bend it is time to trim the plants back as they are brining back the sap to the roots and leaving the dying parts alone may result in decay which is not terribly healthy for the plants. Be sure to check what you should and shouldn't cut back depending on your plants before getting the shears out!

This is just a short to-do list but should cover you and get your garden ready for winter.

Rootball Or Pot Grown?

 At this time of the year we always get asked about Rootball plants and how they differ to our potted plants. In this Blog I will go into a bit of detail about our Rooball plants and what it means to get a rootball plant over a potted one.

Firstly wherever you go to get your rootball plants, a true rootball will only be available from November through to March. The only reason they are available at this time is down to the weather, this is the coldest time of the year and as such the plants will enter dormancy when it gets too cold.

This is the ideal time to get these out of the ground because as the roots go dormant for the year they can be picked up and moved around quite freely and then re-planted into a new area before the plants wake back up. So long as everything is done correctly the plants will start growing in the new area just like how they were in the ground before they were dug out.

Pot grown plants on the other hand do "what they say on the tin" they are pot grown meaning that from a sapling they have been grown in a pot and as they have grown they have been re-potted into larger sizes and given more room to grow into and grow larger.

But what is the big deal about rootball plants, why do so many people like them and why not just get pot grown plants? 

As you have just read above about the Pot grown plants, Rootball plants are a little different in that they have been planted into the ground when they were young and have just been left alone for years to grow into a full and established plant. 

Once established they are then dug out from the ground and put into a Hessian sack. This sack is biodegradable and made in such a way to allow roots to grow through them meaning they are super simple to put into the ground. Not to mention because they have been allowed to mature in open soil, the plants usually are a fatter plant compared with one in a pot which is why people tend to want to get rootball hedging over the pot grown specimens.

So as you can see there are quite a few reasons to pick a Rootball plant over a potted plant but if you want to get some reserved then you better act fast as they are only available from November to March, But it is entirely possible our stock may sell out soon!

Plant Study - Azalea vs Rhododendron

Azalea Japonica
As you can see from the title, we will be looking at the difference between the Azalea and the Rhododendron, while we wrote about the Azalea in our last blog we will be looking more at the details of the Azalea in this blog. While both plants look extremely similar to each other, they are in fact classed as different plants, read on to find out more about these amazing plants.

First off, there are two main types of Azaleas, you have your Deciduous Azalea and also a Japanese Azalea and also just to keep things complicated, all Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhododendron are Azaleas. I know this does not make too much sense right now but if you continue reading I promise your question will be answered.

This can be a little confusing for the novice gardener but hopefully this can all be cleared up and you can confidently get these for your garden. Starting off, you can get one of two types of Azalea, either a Deciduous or an Evergreen (sometimes called Japanese) Azalea. Obviously the main difference between the two is that one is evergreen and the other is deciduous (I know, shocking right?). Now, to tell the difference between an Azalea and Rhododendron is a bit trickier. The easiest way to tell is that most Rhododendrons are evergreen so will keep their leaves through winter, with the exception of a few varieties. The Flower shape is another way to tell the difference, the Rhododendron Flower is Bell Shaped, while Azalea are usually Tubular or Funnel shaped.

However the main difference why these plants are classed differently is because the Azalea has 5 Stamens while the Rhododendron has 10 Stamens. Evergreen Azaleas are smaller and grow a little slower while the Deciduous variety grows roughly to 6ft in the right conditions

The Reason behind this is that Botanical taxonomists have put both the Azalea and Rhododendron in the same Genus as I have said earlier there are differences between the plants but not enough to constitute different names!

 


Now we know the difference between Azaleas and Rhododendrons, we can look at planting them and how best to take care of them. Both Azaleas and Rhododendrons are Lime-hating plants meaning they prefer Acidic soils. We have all had that lesson in science class where we have been told the pH levels are measured on a scale from 14 to 0 where 0 is the most acidic something could be, while 14 is the most alkaline and 7 is totally neutral.

Azaleas enjoy being planted in Acidic soils between 4.5-6.0 pH while rhododendrons prefer 4.5-5.5 pH. This is important to keep in mind while planting as you cannot put it in a bed with a lot of other plants without also making sure that they also tolerate or even prefer Acidic soils.

 

Home test kits for your soil are easily available at most garden centres, but if you are unsure of the soil conditions you can pick up a bag of Ericaceous compost that will make the soil more acidic and more hospitable for your new Azaleas/Rhododendrons.

 

Once you have prepared the soil and have made sure it is a nice free-draining soil you just need to make sure you are keeping the plants well watered/fed and these great plants will thrive in your garden.

Hopefully this gives you more of an insight into differences of the Azalea and Rhododendron, however as you can see, whichever plant you choose they will be a great shrub for any garden!

Plant Focus - Azalea Japonica Mothers Day

Since the big day is on its way, maybe you have no idea on what you are going to buy for Mother's Day this year. Will it be the same standard bunch of flowers or maybe chocolate that could ruin your mum’s diet! If you are stuck for ideas and don't feel like getting the same bunch of flowers and card you get every year, maybe treat her with this beautiful Azalea "Mother’s Day" or (Fête des Mères).

The Azalea Mothers Day is a great plant to get which will earn you brownie points. As it looks great & will remind your mum for years to come of the great gift that you bought once this is planted. The plant itself is a dwarf evergreen azalea meaning it will not get too tall and remain at a smallish size no matter how much attention it gets making it ideal for low maintenance.

It can grow up to 1 metre tall however this is the plants' fully mature state after years of growing, the Azalea itself has dark glossy foliage that bronzes over in winter, and produces masses of rosy-crimson flowers about 5 cm wide at the end of spring.

With Azaleas you have to be careful about the soil you are putting the plants into, as this plant is an "acid-loving" plant, meaning the soil will need to have a special "Ericaceous" compost dug in to make the ground to make it more hospitable for this Azalea.

Aside from the acidic soil that's needed they are not a fussy plant. Sun or Shade, they are more than happy and are sure to grow into a great shrub for the garden. Especially if you need something to fill in a gap in your border, however the more sun the Azalea can get, the better it will do.

Spring - What needs doing?


As Winter comes to a close (Although it doesn't feel much like it some days!) we have a few pointers for all you gardeners who want to get started on the garden and get it ready for this year!

Deadheading - there may be plants in your garden that will need to be deadheaded at this time of year for any that have not already been done. Deadheading is a super simple process but very important to giving them a better chance at producing fuller blooms this year. As you deadhead a plant and remove the flower that has faded and lost its colour it will mean the plant can focus its energy on producing new flowers rather than trying to revitalise old flowers or having to drop them itself.

Plus it can help with cleanup, if you wait too long then flowers will soon start to scatter across your garden and will be easier to keep clean if (aptly said) "nipped at the bud".

For potted plants and plants in the ground, it would be well worth getting a top-dressing of fresh compost to provide a bit of nutrients into the soils.

Stormy Weather and Late Frosts - We have been hit hard by two major storms in February already, with Ciara and Dennis been and gone they have left damage in their wake, and quite possibly bringing with them more bad weather. Keep your eye on the weather to look for signs of a late frost that may hurt your new plants, a bad frost might hurt if you have just put out seedlings or even just young plants.

Weeding and pests! - It can be a laborious job, but an essential one! Going through the ground and removing all the Weeds that may have sprung up over winter. Making sure to firmly pull out all the roots to stop them from coming back, be careful about using any sort of chemicals on areas where you want to plant, as this may affect the area and damage/kill any future plants in the area.

Now the main pests in the Garden you would want to look out for would be slugs especially if you are planting veggies in your garden!

There are a few methods you can use to protect your fresh crops, a popular trap would be to use a half filled jar with Beer and sink that into the ground near to the plants to attract and trap the slugs, or perhaps simply making the soil near the plants harder for the slugs to move on using sharper or rougher textures mulches as well as a copper based barrier have been known to help repel the slugs.
Most of all though would be to keep an eye on your plants especially in the evening to stop those pests!

The Great British Garden

In this blog we will explore what plants are used to create a picturesque “British Garden” We will be covering the main plants you think of such as Yew and Box (Buxus) Hedging to name two of the most “British” hedges.

###### Box (Buxus)
Let’s start by looking at probably the most Iconic British hedging type, Box or “Buxus”, I am sure that even if you do not know the name of the plants you will recognise how they look. The varieties we stock “Sempervirens” have small dark green leaves that not only make for a perfect hedge, but also these plants are perfect for shaping into different Topiary.

More than likely the topiary plant you have seen will have been crafted from this plant (and a lot of patience!) since this plant is a very slow growing plant to get to its Ultimate height of near 5 Metres tall.
Due to the nature of these plants they are becoming tougher and tougher for Buxus plants to be grown successfully thanks to diseases such as Box Blight.
However, if you have the time and patience to look after this plant as it gets started then you will be rewarded by an extremely neat hedge that not only does a great job of screening but also looks fantastic as well!

###### Yew (Taxus Baccata)

Now the next plant we will look at is another Hedge, this one is called a Yew (Taxus Baccata) and can be planted as both a free-standing tree and as a hedge and will look stunning in both settings, no doubt you will have once again heard of this classic tree.
The Photo is newly planted yew that will soon grow into a magnificent hedge.

This plant is an extremely hardy plant and is very easy to grow into a hedge, if you are wanting a flexible plant that will fit in anywhere and will look very formal, again like the Buxus plants this is commonly clipped into any shape or height.
There is a burst of growth in both Spring and Summer however you will not see much growth outside of these seasons, although in Winter you will be treated to the sight of the classic squidgy red berries that form and are an essential food for birds throughout Winter!

In summary for a great formal hedge that has been used in Britain for many years, this is the hedge for you!

###### Holly (Ilex)
Another common hedge found in many gardens the Holly hedge can be a prickly customer but the dark green leaves and bright red berries that form will create a dense and great looking hedge that is definitely one to consider for any garden. The Holly is more resistant to "clay" soils compared to our other plants on this list making it an extremely versatile plant no matter your garden soil type.

Depending on the specific variety you get then you may see some Hollies with softer leaves however if you look on our website Grasslands.co.uk then the "Traditional" Holly you are after are the Ilex Aquifolium Alaska as it is the best form for fruiting on the plant and for prickly leaves.

Moving away from hedging and looking more towards the flowering plants that would fit into a British garden, Wisteria is a great climbing plant and looks great as a free-standing tree.

Wisterias are an extremely hardy and vigorous growing plants with twining stems, they flower with lots of brightly coloured flowers, depending on the variety picked, the colour can differ but will no matter what will add a splash of colour into your garden!

Lavender (Lavandula) are traditional perennials that are perfect for potting or planting in a border to create a short Dwarf Hedge. They have thin silver-grey or green leaves with masses of lovely violet and blue flowers that famously attract butterflies and bees.

They are extremely common in British Gardens for a reason, because of how versatile they are and their smell. When planted on mass the plants will turn your garden into a heaven of fragrance!
The largest Lavenders can reach up to 100cm tall! But of course most gardens would prefer to keep this plant at a smaller height.

Prunus Lusitanica or Portuguese Laurel Plant – Plant Study

The Portuguese Laurel(Prunus Lusitanica)  is an extremely hardy evergreen plant that will Thrive no matter what condition soil this is planted in, this plant may sound familiar to yourselves as it is quite obviously shares its name with the extremely popular Cherry Laurel plants (Prunus Laurocerasus).

While these two plants sound similar they certainly do not look alike, with smaller and darker green leaves that can give the plant a great “formal” look.
Commonly used in hedges it will look very attractive and create a great screen all year round. This plant is also very popularly used as a standalone tree like the one below.

The Portuguese Laurels are a slow growing variety of Laurel meaning that for anyone wanting a Portuguese Laurel hedge may need quite a lot of patience, 15cm per year of growth if they are in good conditions means you would be waiting a long time for your new hedge.


Despite its slow growth, “all good things come to those who wait” and you will truly get an amazing hedge! As the final heights of the plant can well exceed a height of 12 metres and widths of 8 metres wide!

Being so hardy the plant really doesn’t have many types of diseases, there would only be a couple of the big ones that affect most leafed plants such as a ‘Powdery Mildew’ or ‘Vine Weevils’, they are both common problems. To control powdery mildew, making sure the soil has been mulched and watered will reduce as much stress on the plant as possible and can help it naturally fight the infection. You can also make sure to destroy any fallen infected leaves to cut down on the number of infectious spores near to the plant. For any infected shoots, the best thing to do is to prune them out as soon as possible and destroy the cutting.

For Vine Weevils there isn’t any natural cure for the plant such as cutting off infected leaves, there are many insecticides all aimed towards Vine Weevils. Please follow all instructions on the label of the insecticides for best results.

Picking plants for your new build house

We get asked this question a lot “What plants should I use on this new build house I am creating?” More than likely you have a few Ilex shrubs or maybe a Birch or Maple tree outside perhaps even a full Laurel hedge! Can you imagine how bare your house front would look without any  foliage populating your garden?


This Blog post is going to be aimed towards helping those of you who aren’t sure on what plant to get that lush green look, without it soon turning into a jungle to manage!

Nothing looks quite as good as topiary plants, you see them in famous places such as the Palace of Versailles.

With proper care, as you can see, the topiary plants make the garden so stunning. For this new build, you will not be looking for the same amount of topiary plants (unless you are building the next palace of Versailles, but you might want to consider the same shapes of topiary.

Buxus Hedging is so versatile and in a cone, cube, ball or spiral shape it really can make your garden stand out, it doesn’t have to be Buxus that is used as you can use plants like Ilex or Yew! Lollipop Trees are a popular form of Topiary as well, Lollipop is an informal term used widely to describe the shape of the tree (you can see why from the photo above!)
Now you have a suggestion for a hedge and some great specimen plants to bring attention to the garden, you may just want some basic shrubbery groundcover.

Suggestions for common shrub groundcover:
Lonicera –a useful bushy, evergreen shrub. A great alternative to box hedging, it has densely packed small oval leaves and creamy white flowers in Summer and it does grow faster than box as well. It is excellent as it can be planted anywhere and has a high tolerance of clipping as it is fast growing.

Cornus- Or dogwood are deciduous shrubs with bright showy stems. They bear lance-shaped mid green leaves which have beautiful autumn colouring and small, star shaped flowers. Flowers are followed by loose cluster of strawberry like berries.

Lavender – A classic plant that I am sure you already had in mind but were just a bit unsure on whether it fits in? But with its silver-grey leaves with masses of lovely flowers that are so attractive to butterflies and bees it will fit right in with whatever plant you have

Euonymus – Grown for their attractive colourful foliage and autumnal colours. The leaves are simple and vary in both shape and colour between different species. Be sure to take a peek through our selection to find the colour you are wanting!

Skimmia - Perfect for planting in a border. Bearing small star-shaped flowers in spring, some of which smell fantastic. These are followed, on female plants by round fleshy, red to black fruits.

The UK Heatwave - Coping with the heat

There had been warnings over the past few weeks about the hosepipe ban on the 5th August of just those in the North West, however after checking the United Utilities website (https://www.unitedutilities.com).  This was confirmed to have been called off and in the aftermath we are still being told to keep our water usage low until the stored amounts of water are able to be replenished.

However, despite the recent “scare” I thought it would be a good topic to write on, "how to cope for a sudden drought", which is what happened early this July. Many gardeners feared their plants wouldn’t be getting enough water without a hosepipe but there are certain things you can do to ensure that your plants stay hydrated and happy.

In a hosepipe ban it is not banning you from watering your plants, it just means that you aren’t allowed to use the wasteful hosepipe! Filling up watering cans to take for your plants is perfectly fine.

###### Watering
Our number 1 top tip for watering plants in droughts would be the timing of when you water the plants. Established plants will usually require watering about twice a day to make sure they do not suffer from lack of water; meanwhile more established plants can be watered about once a day. The best time to water your plants would be either in the evening or early morning before the main sun and heat kicks in.

By watering your plant in the evening this means you are giving the plant a chance to absorb all the water in the soil while the temperature is still cool ready for tomorrow. If you start watering the plant in the middle of the day it can form bad habits for the plant where it will start to expect water during the hottest part of the day causing wilting if/when it doesn’t get watered.

If you are going away on a trip and think you may not be able to water the plants for a day, another trick is if they are a potted plant to sit them in a saucer of water and give them a good amount of water before leaving. 
This will allow the plants to absorb the water from the bowl without it saturating the roots of the plant and they can go much longer without a water before needing topping up.

Obviously, watering is the main concern in a heatwave and while making sure the plant is watered correctly, why not go that one step further and look into mulching. Using either Compost or a Layer of Bark can help to trap moisture in the soil, by taking the harsh sunlight during the day stopping the soil from having to face the sun and dry out meaning the plants absorb as much moisture as possible from the soil.

Another (albeit somewhat obvious) point to mention would be if you have any potted annual plants that you think may easily dry out in the sun, to move them into a shadier area of the garden or if this is not possible then you can always pick up some shade netting that will help give the plants a break from the sun.

Groundcover plants

Below is a list of plants that we suggest using as “Groundcover”, and what we mean by groundcover are plants that are often used in areas beneath large trees or to cover up large areas of ground that would usually be inhabited by weeds and other undesirable plants!

The first section will be for areas that have access to lots of sun throughout the day, while the second section will be for the plants that prefer shaded sites such as areas covered by large trees etc.

All the plants listed will have links to where they can be found on our website.

Groundcover plants for the sun:

**Geranium– a staple in most gardens, it looks best when planted as either a groundcover plant or shown off in hanging baskets as their trailing stems will droop over the sides of the basket. While these plants prefer full sun they can also be incorporated into partially shaded areas as well.**

 
**Geraniums are a simple plant to grow as is the case with most plants on this list, once planted just make sure the plant has enough water.**

Campanula - As with most plants the Campanula has many different variations that will change the colouring of the flower and shape, but the one thing that will remain constant is that this plant is amazing for groundcover in sunny spots. If you are looking for a mixed border, then this plant mixes well with most other groundcover variants if you are wanting to get a good variety of flowers popping up in your garden

Hebe – coming in a variety of colours the humble Hebe stakes its claim in many borders simply because of the many different varieties that are available depending on the colours that the plant leaves have as well as the many different flower colours that come from the plant.
If left alone the plant could reach a height of 120cm so it would be a good idea to keep this trimmed down if you wish to keep it as either a low growing hedge or just as groundcover.

Cotoneaster – Most varieties of Cotoneaster have dark green glossy leaves depending on the variety and can be grown into different shapes, one of the more popular ways to grow this plant is to trim it into a half standard tree and due to the foliage, it will act like a weeping willow tree and droop down creating an extremely interesting plant especially when it is producing berries!

Groundcover plants for shaded areas:
Heuchera – One of the most well-known plants for groundcover mostly because it has leaves that can show of the plant in many different colours with different varieties, for example just on our site at the time of writing we have two varieties, one called Lime Marmalade, and another called Georgia Plum, one as you can see below is a bright green colour and the other has beautiful rose-purple coloured leaves!

These plants can come in all sorts of colours from bright reds to green/yellow and all sorts of colours in between so they are one to look for while planning for a shaded garden if you want to add a splash of colour to your border!

Bergenia – Otherwise known as pigsqueak or elephants ear are very nice and leafy plants that are clump forming. Usually with Bergenia’s the flowers stand up looking almost like candles. They are not a fussy plant, growing in most types of soil so long as it has plenty of nutrients and water.
Its alternative names are given to it because when the leaves of the plant are rubbed together they squeak and the name elephants ear was given to it due to the size of the leaves.
These plants do not grow very tall making them the perfect plant for the front of your border to show off its flowers and cover that section with its large leaves

Vinca – Ideal for groundcover as the Vinca only reaches around a maximum of 10cm in height and spread out from itself covering the ground surrounding it with bright green leaves and many pretty coloured flowers, this can be planted in a mixed border for maximum effect as it will cover the soil if you are going for larger woody stemmed plants that won’t cover the soil enough to supress weeds!

Ivy (Hedera) – Commonly known to be a climbing plant the Ivy also works amazingly well in a mixed border; the plant will soon grow over the ground stopping any weeds from coming up as well as adding a splash of green to your garden! Coming in many different shades and being variegated this plant is sure to be one of the best-looking plants to add into your border!
