Garrya or silk tassel are evergreen shrubs which are grown for their pairs of opposite, ovate leaves. They bear pendant shaped catkins of petalless flowers which are either male or female with the female often producing purple-brown berries. Garrya are ideal for growing in shrub borders or for use as a wind break in coastal regions. They are well suited to moderately fertile soil in full sunlight and should be sheltered from cold winds. Garrya should be dead-headed after flowering.
