Elaeagnus can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs or small tress, with simple, silvery-scaled leaves. Elaeagnus bear small but highly scented creamy-white flowers in autumn followed by small orange fruits in spring. Elaeagnus makes a lovely informal hedge and is fairly fast growing preferring a well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade although it will tolerate dry soils and coastal winds. Elaeagnus x ebbingei is one of those lucky hybrids that has come to outshine its parents. Most Elaeagnus are grown for their foliage which keeps the garden alive in the dead of Winter, as well as providing a backdrop for plants flowering at other times of the year.
