Berberis or Barberries are deciduous, mound forming shrubs. They have bright attractive foliage and bear small red to yellow berries in Autumn. Berberis have plenty of thorns so are commonly used as a security hedge. Barberry shrubs range in size from dwarf species suitable for rock gardens to larger specimens which are ideal for a shrub border. They are very easy to grow and maintain and respond very well to being trimmed. Berberis should be trimmed after flowering to maintain a neat shape. They are fully hardy shrubs which grow well in most well-drained soils.
