Verbena or commonly known as vervain. They have an upright or columnar habit and have small flowers in dense clusters on top of flower spikes from summer onwards. The green foliage toothed or pinnately lobed leaves, if you snap the stems you will see a perfect square. Verbena likes full sun, if we ever seem to get enough if not semi shade will do nicely, moist well drained soil. In a frost prone area we do recommend you mulch over as only some varieties are fully hardy. Verbena is ideal plant for attracting more wildlfe into the garden, the main insect being butterflies but also it does have a histroy of herbalism, as it seems to have a promising source of medical components.
