Centranthus or valerian are a popular perennial. They have more of a woody structure at the base and have grey green leaves. From spring to autumn they produce dense clusters of ever so slightly fragrant, ball shaped flowers. They are pollinated by bees and butterflies and is ideal for attracting insects in to the garden. Grow in poor to good soil, is also drought tolerant and does well on walls and in coastal gardens and in all conditions. It is also good for pots by the back door.
