Laying a new lawn
Laying a new lawnLaying a new lawn is not rocket science and anyone can do it. There is a laying guide on this site but a few tips from the experts always come in handy.

Get your site ready before you order any turf. The first thing you need to decide is how much you want to put in to the operation. For example, are you making the ultimate lawn with new drains, special growing medium and spirit level finish or do you want an easy to do, basic green up? Most people plum for something in between - a general dig over, level up and a good hard wearing lawn. Whatever you decide there is nothing beyond the consideration of "do I want the work?" to put off even the most novice of gardeners from being able to lay a lawn. So often we are asked, can you suggest someone to lay my turf? Nine times out of ten, the hard bit, the preparation, has already been done. A child can un-roll new turf on a level piece of soil, so what's stopping you? Other tips you need to know. If you need soil get it a few days before the turf.

Order a few extra square metres more than you need in case you damage a few or have under estimated. Get the lawn laid as soon as it arrives. If you are getting help or having it laid for you, order it for the day before as when you are waiting for it to turn up, it quite often doesn't - that's where the saying "sods law" comes from. If you can't lay it in 24 hours, break the stack down to individual rolls to stop the stack heating up or if any longer time is needed completely un-roll the turfs onto a drive or other flat surface and water it.

If you do the lawn between September and April you can worry a lot less about the lastabilty of a stacked turf, as cold weather extends the time before they go off, but you should still get them down as quick as possible.

Finally once the lawn is down water it in well making sure it is soaked. A sure sign you are not watering enough is shrinking. Watering is best done in the early evening to save scorching on a hot day. When there is a prolonged period of wet weather (most of the summer?) put the pipe away and get it back out if it comes dry again.
