Preparing the Site
Preparation can be done at almost any time of the year providing you can work the soil.

STEP 1
Lawns on new sites
Clear away any bricks, rubble, rubbish and piles of subsoil left by the builder. You may need to spray deep rooted weeds and couch grass (use Round-up)
Renewing existing lawns
Skim off with a spade the existing surface removing any infestations which may have encroached over the year's i.e. Weeds etc.

STEP 2
Cultivation
Dig or fork down to a depth of about 4" or less if the topsoil is shallow. Do not bring up the subsoil. If there is insufficient topsoil you may need to buy some in. The best soil for drainage and establishment if you need to buy new is our Root Zone Soil.
Breaking down clods
Break up hard clods with either a heavy metal rake or a garden fork. Removing all large stones and debris as you go.

STEP 3
Firm and rake the site
To firm the site the best tool is your feet. Take short overlapping steps with your weight on your heels. This should be done when soil is reasonably dry. Now rake and re-rake the soil in different directions, again removing any debris. A good cheat is to buy a tonne or two of soil (more if you have a large area) to spread on top, this makes levelling very easy.

Fertilizer
Before laying new turf a preparatory lawn fertilizer may be applied. Carefully use according to the makers instructions.
Final Preparation
Rake gently to remove any bumps and fill in any hollows which may have developed.

STEP 4
Ordering and Laying New Turf.
Order sufficient turf to complete your lawn carefully choosing the correct grade to suit your needs. Laying should take place as soon as possible after delivery leaving it rolled up a maximum of 12 hours in warm weather. If you are unable to lay within 12 hours you must unroll the turf on to a flat surface and water, they could be kept like this for several days, providing you water regularly. Pre-water the site in dry conditions prior to starting. Mark out a straight edge to be turfed and begin here laying a single row. Press the turves closely together. Place a plank over the turves you have just laid and keep your weight on it, now lay a second row staggering the joints like bricks in a wall. Do not try to bend or stretch the turves to fill in the gaps or to form curves but trim off excess later with a half moon edging iron or a kitchen knife. Tamp down the new turf with a tamper made from thick boards on a pole, or give it a roll to ensure proper root contact. Avoid leaving any gaps but if any do occur work a mixture of peat and sand into them with your hand or the back of a rake.

STEP 5
Watering
It is essential that newly laid turf does not dry out. Thorough watering must be repeated until the lawn is established (preferably dusk or dawn) Then weekly watering should be adequate during drought conditions in the first season after laying.

STEP 6
Mowing
When the lawn is established (well rooted) you will have to begin to mow it. Adjust your mower with the blades set high so only the tips of grass are removed. Gradually lowering the mower setting with each cut until the required height is achieved.

STEP 7
Annual Feeding of an established lawn.
To keep your lawn at it's best, in spring, a week or so after the first mow of the season apply (according to the manufacturers instructions) a weed and feed. This should keep your lawn looking tip top all year round. If your lawn suffers during the summer months apply an autumn feed.
